CINDY EMCH, Oakland’s First Lady of Queer Country, U.S. Tour (9/3-10/28)

Cindy Emch
, the “Emchy” at the heart of the “Secret Emchy Society,” writes and performs “heartbreakin’ footstompin’ old-school country music.” Recently dubbed East Oakland’s “First Lady of Queer Country,” she has just issued her official solo debut with her project The Secret Emchy Society. With turns that are happy, sad, heartbreaking and humble, The Stars Fall Shooting Into Twangsville echoes a variety of vintage styles, from rowdy honky tonk to vulnerable ballads, with broad swaths of zydeco, country and cabaret tossed in for good measure that will appeal to fans of June Carter Cash, Lydia Loveless, Neko Case, Shovels & Rope, Dolly Parton and Porter Wagoner.

Yahoo! Music recently premiered the New Orleans/Carter Family-inspired, “Two Feet and a Dream,” the album’s lead track and first single.

On the road since spring, Emchy will continue to take her dark, sexy, boozy ballads, off-kilter anthems, and country weepers, coast-to-coast. Fresh from a successful 8-state Midwest tour with trans folk/punk singer-songwriter Shawna Virago, she’s gearing up for several weeks of shows in Western Canada, including the prestigious Accordion Noir Fest in Vancouver, Farm Fest XI on Vancouver Island, and the Fig Tree Festival in Nanaimo, BC.

Joining her for the Canadian run is Juno-nominated, Neko Case collaborator Carolyn Mark, who adds harmonies to Emchy’s “Had Enough,” an invigorating journey in which two singers commiserate about their self-destructive collaborators. This is the sixth consecutive autumn tour that Mark and Emch are embarking on together.

In early October, Emchy will play five showcases at the Far-West Folk Alliance Conference in Bellevue, WA. Providing accompaniment will be Canadian alt-country outlaw Tolan McNeil, who duets on “Jagged Edges,” the 2nd single from Stars Fall Shooting. From there, Emchy saddles up with two-thirds of the Americana trio Ghost Town Gospel to create a folk punk juggernaut ready to stampede cross-country to spread rabble rousing, foot-stomping goodness.

“It slides into your ears like a good blend of rye whiskies sliding down your throat. Sweet and warm, with just enough of a burn. Cindy Emch’s voice is by turns low and sultry, bluesy and ballsy.” – Jessie Lynn McMains, Pop Culture Writer / Poet Laureate, Racine, WI

“Equal parts June Carter Cash, Nick Cave and Murder By Death.” No Depression

“Imagine Bill Monroe and Sid Vicious having kids together.” From Under The Basement

“Songs which could be used to score a romantic montage for Bonnie and Clyde.” Now This Sound Is Brave

“This album has it all – dark, sexy killing songs, boozy ballads, off-kilter anthems, and country weepers.” Mad Mackerel
